The Dallas Cowboys take on the New York Giants on Sunday night to begin the 2015 NFL regular season, yet victory is far from a guarantee.

Many feel that the Dallas Cowboys have about as good a chance as any other team in the NFC to reach Super Bowl 50 – but don’t expect the best from this team on opening night.

The Dallas Cowboys, on paper, look to be the best team in the NFC East. Countless fans and numerous pundits think that this team could be the class of the entire NFC.

Each of those ideas could very well be true.

Nonetheless, the Cowboys might not be as well-positioned to charge out of the gate as well as a very anxious Cowboys Nation is expecting.

Now, this is by no means an early condemnation of what the Cowboys will bring to the table on Sunday night at the venue formerly known as Cowboys Stadium. Nor is it a prediction that Dallas won’t win the NFC East, win playoff games or advance to the Super Bowl.

This is merely a look at five particular areas that might not be up to par in time for a season-opening victory. We saw much the same thing a year ago when Dallas, opening for just the second time ever at the new stadium, was scheduled to meet a perennial NFC juggernaut in the San Francisco 49ers.

In last year’s regular season kickoff, we knew that quarterback Tony Romo would likely not be ready for mid-season football following multiple back surgeries during the previous year-plus. Questions were large concerning a defense that had seemingly been gutted with salary cap casualties, like franchise sack-leader DeMarcus Ware and 2013 sack-leader Jason Hatcher.

No, the first game of the year is not where anything is won or lost, at least not where the entire season is concerned.

My gut tells me that the Cowboys win this game, but my gut has been wrong before.

Later this week, I’ll detail why Dallas will win this contest, but if they happen to stumble out of the gate this weekend, these are almost certain to be some of the reasons why, in no particular order.
