Improved Secondary

The Dallas Cowboys’ pass defense has been atrocious for as long many us can remember. Drafting players in the first round hasn’t gone as planned (I’m talking to you Mike Jenkins and Morris Claiborne), nor has free agent signings like Brandon Carr and Anthony Henry.

This year may change that fortune as the Cowboys, once again, invested a first round pick in a defensive back. The uber-athlete, Byron Jones from UConn, looks to make a difference, primarily as an inside tight end cover-corner and as a situational free safety.

The Cowboys also invested in free agent Corey White who possesses equally diverse skills as the rookie Jones. Orlando Scandrick, the best defensive back on the Cowboys, is lost for the season, but Morris Claiborne finds himself healthy for the first time since….well, forever. Add in that Brandon Carr seems to finally have the right mindset, and you have some reasons for optimism.

Tyler Patmon is an exciting young player who’s getting a chance to prove himself in the slot. J.J. Wilcox seems to still be progressing as safety with Pro Bowl potential. All of the secondary’s issues can be cured with an improved pass-rush, and it appears the Cowboys have that.

If the pass-rush improves like we all expect it to, it’s reasonable to think the Cowboys could see improvement from every one of their corners currently on the roster. The Cowboys secondary is on the rise and better yet, they have multiple players in contract years. This may be a HUGE step in 2015.
