Late-Season Rushing Attack

Gone is DeMarco Murray, the Dallas Cowboys’ 2014 bell cow, and in comes the career disappointment, Darren McFadden. Last season’s back-up, Joseph Randle, will split time with McFadden as they embark on replacing last season’s rushing champion.

Will either player reproduce the season DeMarco Murray had last year? Of course not, but let’s be honest, neither would DeMarco had he stayed. Even combined, Randle and McFadden may not reach the 1800+ yards Murray collected, but that doesn’t mean the running game will regress as a whole.

As everyone knows, DeMarco Murray faded down the stretch. He started the season at a record-breaking clip, but by December it was easy to see the wear and tear was impacting his game. Injuries and soreness are inevitable with a workload like Murray’s, which is why much of the league is transitioning to a running back by committee approach, rather than one sole ball carrier.

If the Cowboys can spread the carries amongst their four running backs, they could roll into the postseason with fresh legs. Fresh legs down the stretch are an extremely valuable asset to teams with postseason aspirations. The Cowboys may not have a better running game in 2015 the first 10 games of the season, but they should look better over the next 10 (a full Super Bowl run).
