Tony Romo

In previous seasons many might scoff at this suggestion, although I would not have fit into that category.

I have felt that Tony Romo is a top-10 quarterback in the NFL since at least 2007, his first full season as starting quarterback.

While Romo has had some forgettable moments, which some simply refuse to forget, all quarterbacks have and the sum of his work in Dallas is far, far more positive than it is negative.

If anyone had any doubt, last year should have cured those ills.

In 15 games last season, coming off another back surgery in the offseason mind you, Romo completed 69.9 percent of his passes for just over 3,700 yards. His 34 touchdown passes to just nine interceptions were nothing short of MVP-caliber stuff.

With the rushing attack working the way it did and the pass protection he had more often than not, we got a good look at what Romo’s experience and ability can add up to.

Yet, we knew this already.

In nine seasons as Dallas’ field general, Romo has led the Cowboys to the playoffs four times while winning two playoff games. If not for an ugly and unexpected franchise meltdown in 2010, I suspect those playoff appearances would be higher, and perhaps the wins as well.

It’s important to keep in mind that teams win football games, not just quarterbacks. While this particular position is the most critical in football, that doesn’t mean that this player is solely responsible for a teams success.

Did Romo fumble away a potential two-score lead in the opening minutes of the second half in last season’s divisional playoff game against the Green Bay Packers?

No.

Did he place that gorgeous, yet ill-advised, pass down the sideline to wide receiver Dez Bryant in the closing minutes exactly where it had to be?

Yes.

Without the actions of two of Romo’s teammates, we’re talking about no less than a Cowboys team that reached the 2014 NFC Championship Game at Seattle against a Seahawks team they had already beaten the previous October.

Remember how awful Seattle quarterback Russell Wilson looked in the game against the Packers?

Think about that for a minute, and then ask yourself exactly what type of quarterback Romo is.

Romo is the biggest overall weapon for the Cowboys against the Giants on Sunday night.
