Cowboys Re-Sign Offensive Tackle Charles Brown

One year, terms undisclosed

The Cowboys are well set at the offensive tackle position. Incumbent starters Tyron Smith on the left and Doug Free on the right will retain their positions unless something unexpected happens.

Enter veteran swing tackle Charles Brown.

Having just completed his first season with the Cowboys in 2015, the franchise felt that it was better to keep the seventh-year veteran around just in case.

If you thought that things went wrong last year when starting quarterback Tony Romo went down with a broken collar bone (twice), keep in mind that similar issues can arise if, for some reason, an NFL teams loses one of it’s starting offensive tackles.

Dallas wasn’t willing to take that chance.

With second-year veteran Chaz Green set to embark on what’s basically his rookie year in 2016, Brown adds stability to a vital part of the offense. As a second-round selection out of USC by the New Orleans Saints during the 2010 NFL Draft, just nine selections after linebacker Sean Lee, Brown can play either side of the line if needed and maybe – just maybe – he could end up making a case for himself as the future right tackle should the Cowboys decide to move on from Free after next season.

If Dallas knew more about the capabilities of Green, a third-round pick a year ago, then keeping Brown around for another year might not be necessary. Since that’s not the case, having a couple of backup tackles ready and with experience in offensive coordinator Scott Linehan’s system is potentially a major problem waiting not to happen.
