Cowboys: Ranking Moves In Free Agency So Far
Cowboys Re-Sign Linebacker Kyle Wilber
Two years, $5.25 million maximum
This move is a head-scratcher from the standpoint that the Cowboys have a pretty healthy number of linebackers on the roster. Combine the linebackers already at Valley Ranch with the rumors that UCLA standout linebacker Myles Jack might be on the team’s radar later next month in the draft, and I can’t quite make complete sense out of this signing.
Don’t get me wrong, Wilber isn’t a bad player, but he’s not likely to ever start in Dallas and he’s actually a better fit for the 3-4 alignment that the Cowboys scrapped three seasons ago. At the time Dallas went back to it’s 4-3 roots, Wilber was but a second-year player that contributed mostly on special teams.
At 6’4” and 245 pounds, Wilber has the build of a 3-4 edge rusher in just about every way. Playing strongside linebacker is apparently what Wilber will be doing, at least on the depth chart. With those pass rushing skills that he does possess, I’d be tempted to play him some on the weakside, but depth and special teams are the main purposes of this signing.
Wilber is a seasoned veteran who won’t have to be taught anything as he’s been around the block with the Cowboys now for four seasons. Turning 27 years-old just before the 2016 NFL Draft, this is a solid and budget-friendly signing.
