Cowboys Re-Sign Cornerback Morris Claiborne

One Year, Up To $3.75 million maximum

Not long ago, I would have said that re-signing cornerback Morris Claiborne for more than a bottle of wine and a basket of cheese would be far too much. I’ve never been shy about the fact that I hated this player’s selection in the 2012 NFL Draft moments after it happened, yet even I couldn’t have predicted just how bad it’s gone for the former LSU star since his arrival.

Having never participated through training camp or for an entire 16-game schedule, Claiborne has been a mystery and a disappointment for the past four years now.

Well, let’s say the last three-plus.

Claiborne, while still missing games last season, didn’t play all that bad. He failed to pick off any passes and certainly looked like a player that the Cowboys could just let go of.

Then again, perhaps at this point it’s not about whether or not Claiborne can live up to the circumstances that brought him to Dallas in the first place. Right now we’re simply gauging whether or not the sixth-overall selection in the 2012 NFL Draft can play like a second, third or fourth-round pick.

The Cowboys, evidently, think there’s still more to get out of Claiborne, and they might be right.

Whether Dallas ends up transitioning completely away from starters Claiborne and Carr beyond next season remains to be seen, although it’s looking likely that the latter is playing elsewhere next season.

My take is this: If Claiborne’s continued presence keeps the Cowboys from wasting another pick on a highly-rated rookie, like Jalen Ramsey of Florida State, so the franchise can focus on talent for the defensive line, I’m all for it.
