Free Agency Overview

Grade: B-

Free agency is every bit the crap-shoot that the NFL draft is. Perhaps the only thing more beneficial is the fact that in the former you’re dealing with players that have done it at the NFL level, while the latter deals only with players who have not.

The Cowboys have done the right thing in holding off on overspending on players that very often don’t live up to their contracts. In an occupation as labor intensive as the game of professional football, I’ve never liked the idea of paying players for what they’ve done in the past while hoping that they can still do it in the future. I shouldn’t have to remind anybody of the Marco Rivera fiasco, right?

Clear is the fact that Dallas isn’t merely trying to mask the odor of a 4-12 season with a bunch of players from all over the league. It seems like teams that spend the most in FA end up winning the least – remember the 2011 Philadelphia Eagles and that ‘Dream Team’ that went 8-8?

Instead, the Cowboys are merely shoring up the depth chart with experience and familiarity that can still make key contributions. This is most often the best a team can hope for in the grossly overpriced universe of free agency.

The Cowboys will rely on the 2016 NFL Draft to make an even greater impact, not just on next season, but in those that follow. Football is a young man’s game, and after years of salary cap hell to deal with, America’s Team has definitely figured this out.
