With the first two picks in the draft certain to be quarterbacks, will the Dallas Cowboys draft this talented and versatile defensive back?

The Dallas Cowboys hold the number four pick in next week’s draft. The Cowboys have the luxury of drafting the best player available and drafting one of its many needs, like defensive back and defensive end.

Could the Cowboys draft talented defensive back Jalen Ramsey out of Florida State University?

I understand that drafting a corner that high over an elite pass rusher is uncommon, but the Cowboys could easily take Ramsey with its top pick. With the Philadelphia Eagles trading draft positions with the Cleveland Browns, its all but certain the top two picks in the NFL draft will be quarterbacks.

If the Cowboys were going to draft Tony Romo’s future replacement with its top pick, it won’t happen now because the the Los Angles Rams and Eagles are bound to draft franchise quarterbacks.

That scenario alone narrows down the Cowboys’ choices, especially when it comes to the defensive side of the ball, where Dallas needs a pass rusher and a defensive back.

Of course, there have been rumors of the Dallas Cowboys selecting Ohio State’s powerful running back Ezekiel Elliott, but with runners Darren McFadden and newly signed Alfred Morris on the team, I don’t see the Cowboys drafting the former All American back.

Having said that, the Cowboys might use their top pick on Ramsey, even though the Cowboys could use versatile defensive end Joey Bosa out of Ohio State more. In most cases, Bosa would be the top choice. In this situation, the Cowboys could draft Ramsey because he’s simply a more talented, versatile playmaker.

It’s that simple.

Ramsey can be an immediate impact player, a day one starter, if not at least a player that can make a huge difference whenever he’s on the field. At 6’1, 202, Ramsey has the ability to play free safety, strong safety, corner, and slot.

More from Dallas Cowboys

This athletic corner is outstanding at playing man coverage, zone, good at pass defense and an excellent tackler in run support.

Ramsey has great speed, good instincts in finding the ball, a lock down corner, and a relentless playmaker who makes plays.

Further, this dynamic defensive back loves to hit.

Simply put, Ramsey will give the Cowboys something they have longed for several years, a bona fide corner who can create turnovers.

This video illustrates the talent of Ramsey.

Last season, the Cowboys defense ranked in bottom of the league in forcing turnovers. The defensive backfield of Morris Claiborne, Brandon Carr, and Barry Church is not good at all.

The Cowboys missed starting slot corner Orlando Scandrick because of a season-ending torn ACL injury.  Former first round pick Byron Jones will be good, but he made rookie mistakes, too.

When you combine a healthy Scandrick, along with a much improved Jones, a dedicated Claiborne, and Ramsey, the Cowboys secondary becomes legit. There is no need to mention Carr, who can’t cover himself in a blanket, let alone a wide receiver.

Another reason the Cowboys might draft Ramsey is that his coverage skills will allow defensive linemen to get coverage sacks. This is very important because the Cowboys need to improve on their pass rush.

However, Dallas has pass rushers in Demarcus Lawrence, Randy Gregory, and Jack Crawford, with the possibility of re-signing troublesome and talented Greg Hardy.

To be clear, I like Bosa, another freakish athlete who can help the Cowboys pass rush. When I witness the playmaking abilities of Ramsey, I envision former safties Ed Reed, Troy Palumlou, and recently retired Charles Woodson.

All three are future first ballot Hall of Famers.

The last time the Cowboys had a Florida State Seminole on its roster with so much talent was when Hall of Famer Deion Sanders wore the star.

In no way am I saying Ramsey will be anything close to “Prime Time”.

But Dallas has the opportunity to get a dynamic and ultra-talented playmaker, something America’s Team hasn’t seen for a very long time.
