Dallas Cowboys Greatest Quarterbacks: Number Five – Don Meredith (1960-68, 83 starts)

“Dandy” Don Meredith won 48 games as the quarterback of the Dallas Cowboys, and in 83 starts and 104 overall games with the franchise, he totaled 17,199 yards, 135 touchdown passes, and 111 interceptions. Meredith had a 50.7 completion percentage in his time with the Cowboys.

Meredith led the Cowboys to the playoffs his final three seasons from 1966-68, where in that three-year span, the Cowboys were 27-9-1 during the regular season.

Meredith was a thee-time Pro Bowl selection for the way he led the Cowboys to two straight conference championship games against the Green Bay Packers.

The Cowboys quarterback had five seasons of over 2,000 yards passing, and in ’66, he passed for 2,805 yards on 177 completions with 24 touchdowns and 14 interceptions. Even in his final season of ’68, Meredith passed for 2,500 yards with 21 touchdowns and 12 interceptions, his second-highest yardage total of his nine-year career, and that season, the Cowboys were 11-2.

Though the Cowboys didn’t draft Meredith (the Chicago Bears did in the third round of the ’60 season), he played every game of his career with Dallas, became a legend of the team and is also a Ring of Honor member.

Meredith was a thee-time Pro Bowl selection for the way he led the Cowboys to two straight conference championship games against the Green Bay Packers. Though the Cowboys didn’t win either of those games, Meredith helped further lay the foundation for the success that was to come for the Cowboys in the ’70s.
