Dallas Cowboys Greatest Quarterbacks: Number Two – Troy Aikman (1989-2000, 165 starts)

Troy Aikman is the only Dallas Cowboys quarterback to start every game he played in, as he made 165 starts from 1989-00. He was the No. 1 overall draft pick in ’89, and in ’05, he was enshrined into the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

A three-time Super Bowl champion (and a Super Bowl MVP), Aikman was a very big part of the Cowboys’  resurgence in the ’90s. He was the second piece of the “triplets” to be drafted by the Cowboys, as wide receiver Michael Irvin was drafted in the first round in ’88 and running back Emmitt Smith was a first-round pick in ’90. All three ended up as Hall of Famers.

A three-time Super Bowl champion (and a Super Bowl MVP), Aikman was a very big part of the Cowboys’  resurgence in the ’90s.

Aikman is second all-time on the Cowboys’ passing yardage list with 32,942 passing yards while adding 165 touchdowns and 141 interceptions. He completed 2,898 passes and had a record of 94-71 as a starting quarterback in 11 seasons.

Of those seasons, the Cowboys reached the playoffs six times, winning those aforementioned three Super Bowl championships, becoming the only quarterback in Cowboys history to win that many championships.

Yes, the Cowboys were full of talented players in those championship seasons, but every team that wins a Super Bowl is full of talented players, and Aikman was the leader of those teams.

Aikman’s playoff record was finalized at 11-4 overall (he played in 16 total playoff games), and in those playoff games, he completed 63.7 percent of his passes for 3,849 yards with 23 touchdowns and 17 interceptions.

It took until the emergence of Tiny Romo in ’06 for the Cowboys to finally replace Aikman after he retired in 2000, and that shows just how important Aikman was to the franchise. In between Aikman and Romo, the Cowboys used eight different starting quarterbacks.
