Dallas Cowboys Greatest Quarterbacks: Number One – Roger Staubach (1969-79, 114 starts)

At the top of the list is the greatest quarterback in the history of the Dallas Cowboys, possibly the player who most helped make the Cowboys “America’s Team” of the ’70s, in Roger Staubach.

Known as “Roger the Dodger,” No. 12 (just like Aikman’s No. 8) has not been worn since his retirement in ’79, and to be honest, even though the Cowboys don’t retire numbers, no player should ever wear that number on a Cowboys jersey.

Staubach had to prove himself to head coach Tom Landry to become the full-time starting quarterback in a yearly battle with Craig Morton for a few seasons, but once he solidified himself as the better signal caller, the best was to come from Staubach.

In his 11 seasons with the Cowboys, he made 114 starts and finished with a record of 85-29, where he passed for 22,700 yards on 1,685 completions. He also totaled 153 touchdowns and 109 interceptions. He completed 57 percent of his passes in his career that consisted of 131 total games.

Staubach, who invented the name “Hail Mary” for a very long game-winning touchdown pass, was a six-time Pro Bowl selection, two-time Super Bowl champion and he was selected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame in ’85. Staubach was also 11-6 in the playoffs, completing 54.4 percent of his passes in those games.

Looking at the progression of Staubach’s career, his most productive seasons in passing yardage were his final two seasons with seasons of 3,190 yards and 3,586 yards. Also in those two final seasons (1978-79), Staubach passed for a combined 52 touchdown passes, with 25 in ’78 and 27 in ’79.
