Dallas Cowboys Greatest Quarterbacks: Number Fourteen – Steve Pelluer (1984-88, 27 starts)

Being one of the quarterbacks for the Dallas Cowboys in the decade when things began to unravel, Steve Pelluer finished with an overall record of 8-19 in his five seasons with the Cowboys, making 27 starts in his time with the franchise.

He played in a total of 47 games with the Cowboys and started games for the team in parts of 1986-88, including 14 starts in the ’88 season, where he went 3-11 as the starting signal caller. That was his best NFL season, as he passed for 3,139 yards with 245 completions and completing 56.3 percent of his passes.

In two games in the ’88 season (which was Cowboys Hall of Fame wide receiver Michael Irvin’s rookie year), Pelluer passed for over 300 yards in games against the Philadelphia Eagles and the Washington Redskins.

In the Week 8 game against the Eagles, Pelluer was 32-of-46 for 342 yards with one touchdown and one interception, completing 69 percent of his passes on that day in Philadelphia. Against the Redskins, he passed for 333 yards on 21 completions with three touchdowns and one interception.

For his Cowboys career, Pelluer had four games of 300-plus yards passing and finished his five seasons in Dallas with 28 touchdowns and 38 interceptions.

The reasons he’s on this list are he put in five seasons with the Cowboys, made a decent number of starts, had a few solid games, and let’s be honest; he was better than Drew Henson, Clint Stoerner, and Ryan Leaf were in their short amount of time with the Cowboys.

Pelluer finished his career with two seasons with the Kansas City Chiefs, where he made three starts.
