Dallas Cowboys Greatest Quarterbacks: Number Eleven – Steve Beuerlein (1991-92, 4 Starts)

Steve Beuerlein was the backup quarterback who made four starts due to injuries to Troy Aikman was 4-0 as the lead man in 1991, the only season of his two with the Dallas Cowboys where he was the starting quarterback.

In that ’91 season where his four starts occurred, Beuerlein played in eight total games, where he completed 68 of 137 passes for 909 yards. In those games, he had five touchdown passes and two interceptions.

His best performance for passing yardage of that ’91 season came in Week 16 in a 31-27 win, where he threw for 228 yards with one touchdown and two interceptions. A few weeks earlier in Week 13 (his first start of the season), Beuerlein was 14-of-25 for 217 yards with one touchdown.

From Week 12 through Week 16 that season, Beuerlein had one touchdown pass in each game and his two interceptions that season came in his final start in the aforementioned win against Atlanta.

Also in ’91, he started a playoff game against the Chicago Bears, where he was 9-of-18 for 180 yards with one touchdown and no interceptions. The Cowboys won 17-13, as Beuerlein had a QB Rating of 103.9.

In ’92 for the Cowboys, he also started a playoff game, a 38-6 loss to the Detroit Lions, where he was 7-of-13 for 91 yards with no touchdowns and one interception.

After his two seasons with the Cowboys, Beuerlein bounced around the league to play for the Phoenix/Arizona Cardinals, Jacksonville Jaguars, Carolina Panthers and the Denver Broncos. Before joining the Cowboys in ’91, Beuerlein’s first two seasons in the league were spent with the Los Angeles Raiders.
