Dallas Cowboys Greatest Quarterbacks: Number Eight – Jason Garrett (1993-99, 9 Starts)

The current head coach of the Dallas Cowboys was once a quarterback for the team from 1993-99, mostly backing up Hall of Famer Troy Aikman, though he did make nine starts and 23 appearances in his time.

In his nine starts, Jason Garrett was 6-3, with most of his wins coming in ’98, where he was 3-2. He also had wins in ’93, ’94 and ’99. As for the ’98 season, Garrett completed 91 passes for 1,206 yards with five touchdowns and three interceptions. The ’98 season ended up being the lone season Garrett passed for over 1,000 yards.

What stands out about Garrett is he was what a backup should be on an NFL team.

In ’98, Garrett had three games of over 200 yards passing, including a Week 5 game against the Carolina Panthers, where he was 14-of-22 for 287 yards with two touchdowns and no interceptions. For that season, Garrett completed 57.9 percent of his passes and had an 84.5 QB Rating.

Possibly his greatest game as an NFL quarterback came on Nov. 24, 1994, where he made his lone start of the season. That game against the Green Bay Packers on Thanksgiving Day, he was 15-of-26 for 311 yards with two touchdowns and one interception. His QB Rating for the game was 109.6. His touchdown passes that day went for a 45-yard pass to Alvin Harper in the third quarter and a 35-yard pass to Michael Irvin in the fourth quarter.

What stands out about Garrett is he was what a backup should be on an NFL team. He wasn’t the greatest, and he was never going to be a full-time starter, but he could manage a game well enough with the talent he had around him.
