The Dallas Cowboys will face the Green Bay Packers for the second time this season, and the best defense won’t be the defense itself.

I get it, the opening of this article doesn’t quite make sense. There is a picture of Ezekiel Elliott, and the title mentions the defense. However, in this case, the best defense for the Dallas Cowboys will be Elliot and the offense.

This isn’t a blight on the defense itself. For all purposes, the defense has played better than anyone could have thought. In fact, the defense has been a strength at times of this version of the Dallas Cowboys. However, with Rodgers rolling right now, the defense needs the offense to help them out.

What exactly this means is pretty straight forward, the offense needs to keep Rodgers and the Packers offense off of the field. A steady dose of Ezekiel Elliott, Darren McFadden, and Lance Dunbar eating up the clock will keep the defense fresh and ready to attack. Forcing Rodgers to have to throw over and over will help, as the Packers already have a weak run offense. It would allow the defense to pin its ears back and attack.

More from Dallas Cowboys

Sure Dak Prescott will need Dez Bryant, Cole Beasley, Jason Witten, and the rest of the receivers to help move the chains.

The idea will be to force the Packers to become one-dimensional and have to feel pressure to keep up with the Cowboys. As long as the Cowboys chew up the clock, it will keep Rodgers out of rhythm and feel pressed.

The hope is forcing Rodgers to make a mistake.

The strength of the Dallas Cowboys is the offensive line and its ability to wear defenses down. As the game goes on it always seems like Elliott gets stronger. Much of this is because of the incredible offensive line of the Cowboys. Where Dallas needs to focus is getting Elliott those carries and letting the line do what they do best.

After watching the Packers chew up the vaunted Giants defense, the best thing the Cowboys can do is not give Rodgers a chance. Rodgers is by far one of the best in the league at quarterback and giving him time to pick apart a defense is a bad idea for any team.

The Giants didn’t have an offense that can help them keep their defense off of the field. In the end, it was their lack of offense that eventually killed their playoff dreams.

The Cowboys will still need a strong performance from the defense if they are going to move on to the NFC Championship game. David Irving will have to be the David Irving of the second half of the season. The secondary will have to stop a potent passing attack that may or may not have Jordy Nelson. Sean Lee will need to be the freak on defense he has been all season as well.

All of this will be much easier if the Cowboys offense can keep the Packers defense on the field. If the Cowboys are chewing up yards on the ground, best guess is they keep on it until the Packers actually stop them. Picking a poison against the Cowboys has proven harder done than said.

The game could go a million different ways next Sunday. If the Dallas Cowboys want to win they have to have the best defense. That defense starts with the best offense in the league. Ezekiel Elliott could just be the best player the defense has Sunday, and if he is the Cowboys will win.
