Cowboys vs Packers: Playoff Game Preview and Predictions
By Reid Hanson
The Dallas Cowboys host the Green Bay Packers in the divisional round of the postseason. Here is what to expect, who to watch, and final predictions.
The red-hot Green Bay Packers roll into AT&T stadium today to take on the #1 seed Dallas Cowboys this afternoon in what appears to be the game of the week.
Having won the last seven games in a row, Aaron Rodgers is playing on a different level these days and looks to pick apart the Cowboys top-ranked secondary en route to a meeting with the Atlanta Falcons.
Dallas, a favorite of Vegas but the underdog to the experts, look to beat down the Pack like they did earlier in the year. Health is on the Cowboys’ side and momentum is on the Packers’ side. Who will triumph?
Let’s take a look at what the Sport DFW staff is predicting:
More from Dallas Cowboys
- West coast, Texas coast, burnt toast: Cowboys don’t need more runs
- Brandin Cooks will change the way defenses play the Dallas Cowboys
- Why the Dallas Cowboys defensive X-Factor is EDGE Sam Williams
- Dallas Cowboys: 3 head coach options if McCarthy fails in 2023
- Dallas Cowboys: Is CB Jourdan Lewis a tradeable asset?

Here we go again. Two years later, and the Dallas Cowboys and Green Packers meet again in the Playoffs. This is going to be interesting game because the Packers are on a seven game winning streak, and the man who walks on water, Aaron Rodgers, is the hottest quarterback in the NFL with 19 touchdowns and zero interceptions during the winning streak.
Although the Cowboys are favored to win, several critics have the Packers beating the Cowboys, even though Packers wideout Jordy Nelson will miss the game because of broken ribs. In order for the Cowboys to win this game, they must continue to do what works, and that’s run the ball, use play action pass, and dominate TOP (time of posssession).
Dallas won 13 games using this formula. Plus, the defense must continue to get sacks and pressure Rodgers. The Cowboys defense has 16 sacks and 10 takeaways in their last five games. The defense has gotten hot at the right time.

I expect the Cowboys Ezekiel Elliott to have a career day and run for over 130 yards and score a few touchdowns. Dak Prescott will exploit the Packers depleted secondary and throw touchdowns passes to Dez Bryant, Jason Witten, and Cole Beasley. Beasley will be the X factor because of all the attention Dez will command. At the same time, Dez will have a big day too because he wants pay back from two years ago, the non-catch rule.
The defense will have a big game too, sacking Rodgers and forcing turnovers. The Cowboys will win this game in convincing fashion like they did in Lambeau Field.

This will be a classic. I’ve gone back and forth about what I believe will happen in this game, and it comes down to two really important things: the absence of Jordy Nelson and Ezekiel Elliott.
Nelson’s rib injury certainly deals a significant blow to Green Bay’s passing attack and gives Aaron Rodgers one less target. But that assessment honestly minimizes his actual impact because he’s a focal point of the Packers passing attack.
Next: Are the Cowboys about to be upset by Green Bay?
Meanwhile, the Dallas offense will create nightmares for Green Bay. They can bring the safeties up to lure Dak Prescott into passing with what will likely be single coverage, or they can play them back and let Zeke run all over them.
To tell the truth though, it won’t matter. Elliott will get his yardage either way. He’s that much of a game-changer and that’s why Dallas will pull away late without any need for a controversial pass call. Although, it would be really delicious if Dallas won on a blown reception call for Green Bay.
