Texas Rangers top five catchers of all time
Texas Rangers catcher number four — Robinson Chirinos
Robinson Chirinos has been an underrated player for Texas. He’s shown an ability to play great ball when called upon and has brought a considerable amount of offensive firepower to the catcher position.
Defensively, he’s worked well with Rangers pitchers and does a solid job of holding runners. His career caught stealing percentage is 31%, which is three points higher than the league average during his career.
His best defensive season came in 2014 when he caught 40% of attempted baserunners. It should also be noted that he tossed out all four runners that tried to steal third against him that season.
Overall, his offensive game could stand some improvement, yet he’s been known to come through with a key extra base hit or RBI in high-leverage situations. Despite a low batting average, his slugging percentage as a Ranger is 17 points higher than the rest of the league.
He’s also an active philanthropist in the D/FW area through the work of his charity, The Robinson Chirinos Foundation. Together, they’ve donated backpacks to local school kids and volunteered countless hours at soup kitchens and homeless shelters.
