Round 1 – Gareon Conley, CB, Ohio St.

Gareon Conley has shot up the boards this combine due to his 4.44 40 time and his cornerback best 6.68 in the cones. This kid has speed to keep up with any wide receiver in the NFL. He is 6′ 195 pounds which means he has the size to play with any number two receiver, and many of the number ones. He can also outsize and outrun many of the slots in the NFL as well.

He uses his hands well and reacts to the ball. He is a true press-man corner and plays better when asked to do so. He has really good hands which is something the Dallas Cowboys could use in their secondary. He is also pretty good at getting his head around in time to spot the ball.

Where Conley will need to improve is on crossing routes and off-man. When asked to do both he can get a little grabby if he feels he is losing the battle. He won’t wow you in run support, but also isn’t afraid to get in on a tackle.

If he is feeling behind against a receiver, he will sometimes try to predict routes more to make a play and may lose his man. Michigan was the game that showed this.

Conley can come in and make an impact pretty quickly, and with the style of defense the Dallas Cowboys use, he should fit the scheme well. If he is asked to play in zone, he could become a playmaker fairly quickly.

He will need to work on crossing routes, but if he is asked to cover the speed receiver, he should be able to lock them down pretty well.
