Round 2 – T.J. Watt, OLB/DE, Wisconsin

First, let’s be clear T.J Watt is good, but he is not quite as good as his brother J.J. That isn’t to say he won’t be an outstanding player.

Watt played outside linebacker at Wisconsin, however actually projects as a 4-3 defensive end. Watt has a relentless motor to him and will never take a play off. He can play the run as well as he plays the pass, and when asked to rush on a twist will almost always get some pressure on the quarterback. He will almost always get his hands up and look to get into passing lanes. He jumps off blocks quickly and locates the ball and takes a quick lane to get to it.

Where Watt will need to improve is he has to compensate for his lack of quick reaction. He won’t beat a lot of people purely on speed, but he will beat everyone on effort. He will need to add some size to his base in the NFL to keep from being pushed around by bigger tackles.

His footwork can get sloppy at times, but he has the talent to fix this quickly. He will have to add to his pass rushing skills, but his brother and coaching could help him quickly.

If Watt is around in the late second round, he could come off the board and play right away. He has all of the intangibles the Cowboys love in a player and should get better quickly.
