Round 6 – D.J. Jones, DT, Mississippi

D.J. Jones will get overlooked and will slip in the draft. Mostly because when you watch tape on him, he wears down as games go on.

How he looked early in the season looks a heck of a lot different later in the season. However, this is where Rod Marinelli and the Dallas Cowboys could be the perfect landing spot for him. If he is used in a rotation until he can work on his endurance, he will thrive.

He has the power to fill a one gap and gets a solid push. He is rarely on the ground due to his stocky frame and a great base. He is unusually quick for a player his size and plays the screen as well as anyone in this draft. He will get after a ball carrier and will pursue until the carrier is brought down.

Due to his size, he will overrun plays at times as it takes a second to stop and start again. He is a little short armed and teams could overlook him due to this. He won’t be a day one starter but would be fine in a rotation.

He is a pretty good interior pass rusher but surprisingly doesn’t win a ton one-on-one with larger guards. He will need to work on endurance and adding strength to his punch. Has good hand technique, but due to short arms will need to become a master at using his hands.

Jones is an interesting prospect and given time could be a starter one day. As part of a rotation, which Marinelli likes, he should find a niche in the defense for the first season or two.
