Daniel Montiel, TE, Memphis – Projected Round(s) – UDFA

Montiel is a local product of Texas. He played high school football in Arlington and committed fairly early to Memphis. At the very least I wouldn’t be surprised if the Dallas Cowboys bring him in for their local product workout day.

He won’t be a starter on day one, but he could be a stash and hide for a season if the Cowboys feel comfortable for the season at the position.

Montiel is an interesting prospect as it is hard to know just where his ceiling is. He wasn’t a full-time starter until 2016 and averaged over 12 yards a catch.

He only had 228 yards and five catches over 20 yards. He did score 3 TDs, but the most interesting stat is of his 27 receptions, 15 were for first down. It seems that Montiel moves chains well and knows what he has to do to beat zone.

Finding tape on Montiel was a little hard, but once I found a few games I loved the way he ran the seam. He is willing to engage in a block and gets out pretty quickly up the seam. He can also line up as an H-back and goes from 0-top speed out of the backfield. He catches the ball away from his body and doesn’t fumble or drop many passes.

He is a willing blocker, but looks like he might overextend at times which throws him slightly off-balance. He has a good first punch, but will need to work on his hand placement. His route running is a little sloppy and he tends to round off his routes, but you can see at times he will run a strong route with a good fake. He could turn into a TE who can do a little everything.
