No. 1: Major League, 1989

The Classic. This was unquestionably the top baseball movie to the crew here at Sport DFW. It made all of our top-3. In fact, all of us but one rated it number one.

Major League didn’t tug at the heart strings. There wasn’t an underlying love story, no prejudice overcome, no depth whatsoever. And it was glorious. It was a rude, crude, and fun. Movie critics were understandably less praiseworthy than fans of the movie, but I’d argue it was the critics that are “juuuuust a bit outside” with their reviews.

More from Texas Rangers

I mean it had Charlie Sheen playing one of the best sports characters ever. It had the All State guy, Tom Berenger, Shawn Spencer’s dad, James Gammon’s mustache, and Wesley Snipes. And of course, Bob Uecker is in the booth bringing it all together.

The movie vilified ownership and made us root for the underdogs. The formula wouldn’t work if they were the Yankees. It had to be a team that was so traditionally bad no one could hate them. It had to be the Cleveland Indians.

Not surprisingly, all of the big personalities clashed on the field, in the locker room, and just abiut everywhere else.

But eventually they all bonded together with their hatred for owner Rachel Phelps. And soon they would all become an unstoppable force in spectacular fashion.

I can say that before yesterday I hadn’t watched this movie for roughly 10-years. Yet, I can recite something in almost every scene. The one-liners are endless.
