Round 3, Pick 92 : CB Sidney Jones, Washington

I promise I am not a Washington fan. It’s rare when two supremely talented cornerbacks come out from the same school without one noticeably propping the other up, but such is the case here.

The Dallas Cowboys have expressed disinterest in picking up a red shirt injured player this season, but Sidney Jones in the 3rd round is too hard to pass up.

Sidney Jones, once a top-3 cornerback in the draft this year, suffered a tragic Achilles injury during his pro day. Subsequently, he dropped from a top-15 pick to a Day-2 pick.

The Dallas Cowboys are known to take gambles on injured players in the past. Thinking long-term rather than short-term they have selected players like Jaylon Smith, Bruce Carter, and Sean Lee.

At 6’1” 186lbs, Jones looks extremely lean lined up in the secondary. Not extraordinarily physical, Jones sticks to receivers like glue. He’s a beast in man coverage and his 4.47 40-time says he’s fast enough to stick with most at the next level.

Achilles injuries to cornerbacks are never a good thing. His stock is dropping simply because no one knows exactly what kind of player will return. I will say his hip fluidity and ability to change directions is second to none so he could see a 20% decline in ability there and still stand out as a premium cornerback in the NFL.
