Dallas Cowboys: Undrafted Free Agents, Who Are These Guys?
Joe Jones , LB, Northwestern
The issue on Jones is his lack of playing time. At Northwestern he wasn’t on the field all of the time, but when he was he did everything you would want him to. He is fast, at his pro day he ran the 40 at only .02 slower than Jabril Peppers. He is an athletic freak and looks the part. He is a little short, but plays bigger. He can hit hard and will wrap-up as a tackler. He is smart and can play at the line and even has some coverage skills.
Jones is a long shot only because no one knows who he will be once asked to play a full-time gig. In short doses he looks solid, but not special at any one thing. He could land on the practice squad just because of his athleticism alone. I would expect him to work hard and do everything to make the team, it seems to be who he is.
Austin Appleby , QB, Florida
Purdue QB who transferred to Florida to get just a little more out of his chances to make the NFL. I’m honestly not sure what to make of Appleby. One moment he looks good, the next he throws three interceptions. He has a long wind-up and doesn’t always throw a pretty ball. He has the arm strength, just not sure he has the arm talent. His footwork is choppy, but he is mobile and gets away from the blitz well.
I think it will be between Appleby and Rush for the third string QB. Appleby has the upper hand in mobility, but Rush has the better arm. Depending on what the Dallas Cowboys are looking for it will be an interesting fight. I’m not sure Appleby will stick around, but one thing is for sure, he will put every effort in.
