Are the Dallas Cowboys still America’s Team?

The answer to this question is a very simple and concise, “yes.” The Dallas Cowboys are “America’s Team.” Was this even up for debate after the countless surveys and data out there to prove this fact? Some would like to argue it. Yes, I am talking to you, Stephen A Smith.

What does it take to be “America’s Team?” Well, it’s quite obvious and apparent that consistently winning isn’t part of the equation. Sorry Cowboys fans, but I have to write this as objectively as possible.

The Dallas Cowboys haven’t won consistently for a very long time.  But that’s neither here nor there, because it isn’t needed to be “America’s Team.”

Ratings

Last season started off badly for the NFL. They had Cam Newton getting knocked around and taking numerous head shots with no punishment. They had someone refusing to stand during the National Anthem. And they had some of their worst TV ratings in history.

More from Dallas Cowboys

Now, here come the Cowboys. After a 4-12 record the year before, they played a surprisingly boring game against the New York Giants. Rookie quarterback Dak Prescott and rookie running back Ezekiel Elliott didn’t really impress much, either. Yet, that game had the highest ratings of the week.

Now we can sit here and hash out a game-by-game of the season, but that would be both time-consuming and pointless. Everyone, including people that despise the Cowboys, know how things turned out at the end of the season.

The two wonder kids, Ezekiel Elliott and Dak Prescott, took the league by storm. One won Rookie of the Year honors while the other won both the AP ground player of the year and the rushing title. This couldn’t have happened at a better time for the NFL.

Between the Cowboys’ two rookies and the Oakland Raiders having a great year, the ratings for the NFL soared. Out of the five games with the highest ratings, the Cowboys played in four of them. One of those broke a Fox Sports Thanksgiving record of 35.1 million viewers. Therefore, according to Neilson Ratings, the Cowboys are still “America’s Team.”

Jersey Sales

Now if that wasn’t enough for you, here some more fun facts. According to the NFLPA website, the Cowboys finished the season with four players in the top 20 in jersey sales. One wasTony Romo, who hadn’t played all year. Elliott, Prescott, and Dez Bryant took the first, second and fourth spots.

Cold hard Truth

So, people can sit there and try and take the title of “America’s Team” away from the Dallas Cowboys, but it won’t happen. They are now a team on the rise. Imagine the views and ratings this team will get when they get back to the top of the mountain. People had better be ready.

The funniest part about all of this is the simple fact that love them or hate them, you will watch them. Whether it’s to see them lose or whether you’re a fan.

Next: Let's be patient with Xavier Woods

In all reality, (and I’m really sorry to tell you all this, but . . .) at the end of the day, you may not have a choice but to watch them unless you buy the Sunday Ticket. That’s because the chances are, the Prime Time slots . . . yeah, those will be reserved for Jerry Jones‘s billion-dollar franchise.
