Cowboys Fans, DeAngelo was right…and that’s a good thing

DeAngelo Williams recently had some choice words for Cowboys Nation, and honestly, he was probably correct. Here’s why that’s a good thing.

The Dallas Cowboys and their fans just received a shot of adrenaline when free agent running back, DeAngelo Williams, went off on them. As a guest on Adam Schefter’s “Know Them From Adam” podcast, Williams explained why the Cowboys are one of four teams he would never play for.

"“The Cowboys, they win. They just don’t ever show up during the playoffs. They always disappear in the playoffs. I’ve got a depiction of the Cowboys’ fanbase. During the regular season last year, they were on cloud nine. You couldn’t tell them anything because they were going to win the ‘ship – that’s all they said. Fans just got extremely super annoying.”"

DeAngelo, a born and raised San Francisco 49ers fans, is understandably anti-Cowboys.  He only now admits his dislike at the ripe old age of 34. An age where his career is virtually over and the Cowboys would have exactly zero interest in him as a player. Bold move, DeAngelo.

But to be honest, what he said was mostly correct. The Cowboys do win from time to time. And the Cowboys have struggled in the playoffs. Those are facts and I’m pretty sure most of us in Cowboys Nation can admit it.

Since the Triplets vacated the franchise twenty years ago, the Dallas Cowboys haven’t had very much success. They had a few playoff appearances but that’s about it. So when things started going right last season, collectively we did get pretty excited. I’m sure we were as annoying as heck to the rest of the nation…ummm excuse me… I’m sure we got “extremely super annoying”.  But we don’t have to apologize for that.

DeAngelo went on…

"“Then, the minute they lose, they either got cheated, somebody was hurt – the excuses start flowing. It’s just amazing to me. That fanbase just in general can’t handle defeat. Still, to this day, they say that the Dez Bryant catch against the Green Bay Packers was a catch.”"

First off, Dez did catch it. Read the article below for further discussion on that.

But moving on, I can’t help but focus on the statement, “they just can’t handle defeat”, and feel proud. Cowboys Nation, the fanbase that has suffered through some very lean years and some very significant heartbreak over the past two decades, can’t handle defeat. Damn right.

More from Dallas Cowboys

I don’t know about you but I’m proud of my inability to accept loss. As my pops always said, “Only losers are good losers.” The point being, once you’ve learned to gracefully accept defeat you become defeated. As Cowboys fans we’ve had plenty of opportunity to become defeated over the years, yet we fight on. We look for answers. We refuse to accept the loss as something that was unavoidable.

That’s what all good fans do, DeAngelo.

As a professional sports blogger, I’m looking for answers 24/7. I’m critical after wins and after loses.

The NFL is a game of inches and I’m trying to identify those tiny correctable mistakes that can tip the balance.

Sometimes there are blown calls. They are rarely solely to blame but they are certainly worth noting. Injuries matter too. Winning a game is largely based on winning matchups. If a starter is injured and the backup is unable to fill his shoes, it needs to be discussed.

In other words, if we think the reason the Cowboys lost a game is because all of the pass-rushers were hurt, then we don’t need to tear down the franchise, we just have to find a way to get healthy.

If DeAngelo is amazed (his word) by fans acting fanatical, then every moment of every day must be an adventure to him. In DeAngelo Williams voice, “I saw a brown dog in the neighbors yard. Amazing! It walked on four legs! Amazing!”

DeAngelo Williams may think he’s saying something scathing or controversial but he’s actually paying Cowboys Nation an enormous complement.

No, DeAngelo, I’m not a good loser. I can’t handle defeat. I’m loyal even without playoff success. Ya know what? I’m also “extremely super annoying” when things start looking up.

And I’m dang proud of that. #DezStillCaughtIt
