After an up and down first four weeks for the Dallas Cowboys, some are feeling Jason Garrett should be on the hot seat. The question is should he?

Over the past few seasons I have been very hard on Jason Garrett. I have watched him throw questionable challenge flags, have head scratching playcalling, and seen a frustrating trend of not making adjustments in game. However, as much as I think Jason Garrett isn’t a very good coach, there are some reasons he will stay.

While I personally think Garrett should have been on the hot seat for the past few seasons (yes, last year was a good year for him and his staff), this isn’t a black and white issue. I can see a change in the coordinators before I see a change at the head coaching position. Rod Marinelli could very well be first on the hot seat.

The main issue isn’t really Jason Garrett, it is Jerry Jones.

As long as Jones is the owner, I can’t see many strong coaches wanting to work for him. While Stephen has taken over a lot of the operations, Jerry still has the final say when it comes to the Dallas Cowboys. I just can’t see a proven winning coach wanting to work for him. As much as it hurts me to say, but I do believe Jason Garrett is safe for now.

This could however, lead to a turn-over in the rest of the staff. I could easily see Jerry letting Garrett pin a poor season on Rod Marinelli and Scott Linehan and go hunting for their replacements. I would be surprised if Jerry pins anything on Garrett.

Even with the poor in-game adjustments (if really, any at all) and awful clock management, much of the issues can easily be pushed to the rest of the staff. Remember, Jason Garrett no longer calls plays.

It will be a hard pill to swallow if Jason Garrett continues to stay around for more than a few seasons if this pattern of mediocrity continues. For now, we are stuck with Jason Garrett as the head coach.

Even if he were to get fired, his replacement might be worse or fall into a situation where they don’t want to work for Jones.

History shows this tends to be the case. So the question to whether Jason Garrett should be on the hot seat is a hard one. I believe he has all the reason to be on the hot seat if this season falls apart.

The truth is he probably won’t be. I do think that the rest of his staff could be on the hot seat well before him. With a lot of football left to play we will all see how this season unfolds. However, right now all signs are pointing to some kind of change coming, and it probably won’t be Jason Garrett, and it surely won’t be Jerry Jones.
