Dallas Cowboys: Assessing all of the offseason needs
Regardless, of what the Dallas Cowboys do at any of the coaching positions, there are some needs on the field they need to address.
Some of the needs are pretty obvious, others not so much. These things will change as free agency heats up and we get closer to the draft.
Looking at NFL.com, their three needs are tight end, defensive tackle, and cornerback. CBSSports has the needs as tight end, right tackle/guard, defensive tackle, and linebacker. NBCSports is currently listing wide receiver and defensive tackle. And if you dare try your hand at the Fanspeak Draft, you will see a massive list of needs, that seems to change about once a week.
Tight End
I can see the tight end as Jason Witten is not getting any younger and there is honestly not much behind him that have a complete game. No matter what you think of Rico Gathers, truth is, he hasn’t played much and is a complete unknown.
This is a fairly deep draft in terms of tight ends. While there isn’t a lot of top of the draft talent, there is quite a bit of talent to be had from the second to the 5th rounds.
Defensive Tackle
Defensive tackle is another position that came up pretty often. It will depend on who the Dallas Cowboys keep, but a defensive tackle can be considered a strong need. The Cowboys, at times this season, were gashed up the middle in the run game when Sean Lee was out. Also, there was not much pressure coming up the middle on the line. It would make sense for the Cowboys to get stronger up the middle to solidify what looks to be an improved unit.
Offensive Line
The only other position I can see is a high need is offensive line. When Tyron Smith went down, the depth across the Cowboys front was exposed. This upcoming draft is really thin at offensive tackle, so grabbing one early or in free agency may become a necessity. While this may not be a hit among many fans, we have all seen what happens when you go light at this position.

Wide Receiver
Wide receiver could be seen as a need, as their were some issues there this season. It could be argued (and has) that part of it was scheme, shaky quarterback play (we will get here), and coaching.
Regardless what the reason, the Dallas Cowboys do need to get stronger here. There is some decent talent in free agency this year as well as the draft. It would not be surprising if they try to get better here, somehow.
Linebacker
Linebacker is an interesting position to think about. Sean Lee, when healthy, plays like an All-Pro caliber linebacker. Jaylon Smith improved quite a bit from the beginning of the season to the end of the season. Some of this is having Lee with him, but he did get better.
If the Cowboys decide to get more linebacker help, it would go a long way to also help the middle of the defense and against the run game. This is a very deep draft at linebacker and without a doubt will be a position that will be addressed at some point, potentially first or second round.
Secondary
Cornerback is another position that is hard to consider. Toward the end of the season the corners played much better and if there is any position in the secondary that needs help it is safety, not corner. A veteran presence would help, but there seems to be a lot of people who feel the secondary is no longer the Dallas Cowboys weakest link.

One surprising position of need on Fanspeak that was quarterback.
However, the more I thought about it, the more I realized the Dallas Cowboys do need more at quarterback.
If you are on the side of Dak Prescott being able to get better and be the starter for some time or if you are on the side who thinks Dak has reached his ceiling and could be upgraded, both should want help at quarterback.
There is no longer a veteran voice behind Dak Prescott with Tony Romo, Mark Sanchez, and Kellen Moore gone. Just getting an experienced backup could do wonders either way you look at Dak.

Now, a lot of this will change as we move toward the draft. Some of this could change based on coaching changes, scheme changes, free agents (both internal and external), and retirements. This is a good start to look at the Dallas Cowboys moving into 2018. Bring on the offseason!
