4th Round – Josey Jewell – LB – Iowa

Finally a linebacker for the Dallas Cowboys. Much of the reason it took so long was the way the draft fell. I went between Jerome Baker and Jewell and after watching both for a little while I went with Jewell. He will need to add a little size but his ability to play against the pass better than Baker was the final factor.

Jewell is a little undersized but has a ton of potential as an outside linebacker. He can play side to side well and is not a liability against the pass. He is not afraid to take on blockers and has shown flashes when asked to rush the passer. He is a pretty sure tackler and doesn’t miss many open field opportunities.

Where Jewell will have issues is against size. He will likely need to add about ten to twelve pounds. If he can bulk up without losing speed, Jewell could contribute quickly. He may not be a pro bowl caliber player, but he also won’t be the reason the team gets beat. He is a solid linebacker who should have a long career in the NFL.

There were a few players here who were worth taking with Jerome Baker and running back Rashaad Penny. It made sense to grab one of the best players available and it happened to be Jewell was up near the top on several rounds.
