5th Round – Justin Jones – DT – NC State

At this point in the draft you are looking for guys who can contribute or that could have fallen for some reason. Jones could fall into that category. Jones did suffer a small injury at the beginning of the season and may have been a little overshadowed by B.J Hill who played next to him. Jones has pretty good ability to rush the passer from the inside but is not the run stopper Hill is.

If Rod Marinelli returns, Jones could be a smart pick for his defense. Jones is more quick than stout and should be able to contribute as part of a rotation early on with the ability to develop into a long term piece. He uses quickness at the point of attack and has enough power to take on centers and guards.

The biggest knock on Jones he’s not the best against the run consistently. He can get washed out on double teams, but does set up linebackers fairly well. He will need to add a little size if he wants to be more of a three down player.

This may be late for a defensive tackle, but the way the draft fell at this point he was best player available.
