MIAMI GARDENS, FL – DECEMBER 31: Jarvis Landry /

3. Jarvis Landry

Jarvis Landry is the best slot receiver in the NFL these days. Why Miami hasn’t locked him down is a mystery to me. Perhaps it’s because he wants to be compensated like a great “receiver” and not just as a great “slot receiver”.

Perhaps that’s also why so many Cowboys fans  turn up their noses at the prospect of such a receiver. After all, Dallas is certifiably rich in slot receiver talent. They have Cole Beasley and Ryan Switzer locked into the spot. Frankly, they don’t have enough opportunities for the two they have.

But Jarvis Landry offers more than what the Cowboys duo offers. He has deep speed and downfield playmaking ability. He may not line up on the outside much but he stretches the field. And that’s something no Cowboys receiver or tight end has been able to do down the middle lately.

The Cowboys were victimized by two types of defense last season:

  1. Man coverage with a stacked box with possible blitz implications.
  2. Two Deep with no hope for getting a big play.

Jarvis Landry could beat both of those. Against man coverage Jarvis can cut inside or outside like Beasley, but he can also go down the middle. This means the simple double coverage opponents threw at Bease last year wouldn’t work so well.

And how do you beat cover 2 and two deep? You send three on deep routes. Dallas rarely sent Beasley and Jason Witten isn’t exactly known for his deep speed.  Jarvis Landry could split the safeties and change the entire gameplan.

He wouldn’t come cheap but he’d be a star in Dallas.
