Round 6 – Marcus Allen – Safety – Penn State

When Barry Church left in Free Agency, it left a hole at Strong Safety.  Marcus Allen of Penn State can fill that hole.  I’ve seen quite a bit of Marcus Allen since I live in the Northeast and see many Penn State games.

Allen is a solid yet unspectacular player.  He does his best work around the line of scrimmage.  Although, a player with his skill set is coveted by NFL teams.

Allen is very good at finishing tackles.  Over his Penn State career, Allen had 320 total tackles, 17 tackles for loss, and 10 passes defended.  He is very capable of covering Tight Ends with his aggressive play style.

Since I’ve seen a lot of Marcus Allen, I noticed that there are some flaws in his game.  He frequently gets beat because he lacks patience in reading the quarterback.  This has turned him into a reactor instead of anticipating plays.

He also is not very good at maintaining legal contact with receivers which allows a lot of separation.  He often tries to hit harder than necessary which sometimes causes him to miss. This issues, however, are all fixable and the Cowboys defensive system should also be beneficial to him.
