1st Round – Derwin James – Safety- Florida State

Here is the situation, six quarterbacks are selected in the first round pushing a ton of talent down the board. I had Minkah Fitzpatrick here prior to the Washington Redskins trading for Alex Smith. Now that they have their quarterback, Fitzpatrick will likely be their selection.

That plus the selection of top-tier pass rushers, offensive linemen, and cornerbacks will help James slide to the Dallas Cowboys at 19. The Florida State safety is a freakish athlete capable of adding some extra physicality to a secondary. He has great size and can be a very versatile addition to the Cowboys defense.

He can play safety and linebacker but in more of a hybrid style. He is the type of rare athlete you only see early in the draft and the combine could easily drive his stock up. The Cowboys could use James as a strong safety which would be one step closer to solidifying the teams secondary, a mission the Dallas front office embarked on a few seasons ago.

The main concern with James is the fact that he is not really a center fielder when it comes to playing the ball. In the Cowboys system, Byron Jones already plays free safety so the team could use James as the perfect compliment. James should slide as the offensive line talent in this draft is weak and teams with young quarterbacks will be investing in their protection.

Alternate Pick: Marcus Davenport – Defensive End – UTSA
