Dallas Cowboys complete 7-Round Mock Draft V1.4
By Carl Daley
Round 3: Carlton Davis – CB – Auburn
The Dallas Cowboys should pursue a cornerback in this round, however, there are two that I am torn over. Cornerback, Mike Hughes from UCF was originally my pick because I thought Davis would be gone. But since this is a mock I figured the taller Davis could be around if teams end up focusing on other positions in the third round.
All the top corners should be gone by the end of the first round. Second tier guys like Davis and Hughes have a lot of upside for the Dallas Cowboys as they should be fairly proficient cornerbacks in the NFL.
They may not be the “Jalen Ramsay” style of player this secondary needs, but they could easily become young successful cornerbacks in the Cowboys system. Davis or Hughes would replace Orlando Scandrick most likely as the Cowboys could move on from their veteran wide receiver in the offseason.
If Scandrick does indeed get released or traded, adding a cornerback would mean so much more especially as we get to these mid-round selections. Dallas could never land Joshua Jackson or Denzel Ward with the 19th pick so waiting until the team takes care of other more pressing needs seems to be the wisest decision.
At 6’1, Davis has the right size for a Dallas cornerback selection as he should be able to bring the fight to some of the biggest receivers in the NFL. While his speed may leave something to be desired, he is still a sound selection in the third. Hughes is a speedy corner but at 5’11 may need to put on some muscle before he can go head to head with NFL wide receivers.
He has shown great cover skills and has been a terrific return man. My alternate pick is wide receiver, Marcel Ateman is another big-bodied wide receiver who some have should be valued higher than his Oklahoma State teammate James Washington.
Alternative Pick: Marcel Ateman – Wide Receiver – Oklahoma State
