Cowboys 7-Rd Mock Draft v2.0: Finding the X-Factor (2/7)
By Reid Hanson
Round 7, Pick 236
Adonis Alexander, CB, Virginia Tech
Alexander is a carryover pick from my first mock draft of the season. His stock is moving in the wrong direction on most draft boards but I still like the potential his film is showing from Virginia Tech.
Alexander fits the mold the Cowboys have been targeting for their defensive backs: He’s long and rangy capable of serving a few different roles like Byron Jones and Xavier Woods. That doesn’t mean he projects better as a safety either. He’s just in the same mold.
More from Dallas Cowboys

As long as the Kris Richard transition goes on without a hitch, I expect Byron Jones to move outside to CB. A number of other shake-ups are imminent but I see a place on the team for a player like Alexander. Standing 6’3” 193lbs, he looks a lot like Richard Sherman.
Alexander is strong man-press corner who can play the bump-and-chase role Sherman often played in Seattle. For a man his size, he’s oddly fluid in his hips and able to change direction to stay with double-moves.
He’s going to be a liability against the smaller quicker receivers but he’s going to be an asset when matched against the big guys like Brandon Marshall and Alshon Jeffery.
Frankly, I’d select Alexander in the fourth round but with him dropping on boards I’m going to roll the dice and wait for value with this pick.
Next: Were the Cowboys receivers the problem?
Summary
I didn’t force things to fall my but rather took what the draft was giving me and found excellent value in the process.
