Cowboys 7-Rd Mock Draft v2.0: Finding the X-Factor (2/7)
By Reid Hanson
Round 2, Pick 50
Dallas Goedert, TE, South Dakota State
Dallas Goedert, billed as the next Gronk, has major boom/bust potential. In fact, up until I scouted him two weeks ago, I wasn’t going to even consider him as an option for the Cowboys. But after seeing more film, and re-assessing his value, I think he’d be a steal at pick 50.
Before the Senior Bowl many predicted Goedert to go in the first round. But after getting injured early, Dallas’ stock took a hit. The small school product dominated the competition that he played, but it was imperative for him to prove it against the Senior Bowl talent. Since he couldn’t prove it, the risk of him being a bust increases, resulting in a drop of draft stock.
While I admit I’m hesitant to call him “the next Gronk”, I see a skillset that translates. I see a capable blocker and dynamic playmaker. I am giddy to see him available in the 2nd round when the Cowboys go on the clock.
D.J. Moore was long gone, so were Will Hernandez and Isaiah Wynn (three players I value much higher). I expect Jason Witten to play two more seasons but also see urgency to address the position. Rico Gathers may be great. He also may never play a down. Everyone else is nothing more than depth.
Dallas Goedert is a true TE1 with the strength and build to be a dominant blocker playing the role of TE2 behind Witten. The Cowboys can bring him along slowly and still use him to add a major X-factor to the offensive attack.
