Cowboys 7-Rd Mock Draft v2.0: Finding the X-Factor (2/7)
By Reid Hanson
Round 4, Pick 138
Frank Ragnow, G/C, Arkansas
Frank Ragnow is a steal in the third, let alone the fourth. But he’s slipped in numerous mock drafts because he’s recovering from a significant injury that ended his senior season.
Projected as a center, he’s not the perfect fit for a Cowboys team that already has an All-Pro in Travis Frederick. But Ragnow is by far the best player available and he can play guard, so why not pull the trigger?
At 6’5” 309lbs, he’s built perfectly for an interior lineman. Ragnow is fundamentally brilliant. What he lacks in top-end athleticism he makes up for in perfect execution. The question really isn’t whether Ragnow is worth it, it’s really how can the Cowboys get him.
As mentioned before, Ragnow had a significant ankle injury that required surgery. It also has kept in out of action all winter. He’s expected to be back at full speed by training camp, but even that will need to be vetted.
Pro Bowl talent falls for a reason, and the gamble on his health is the reason he’s falling on boards. But this pales in comparison to Jaylon Smith’s career threatening injury two years ago. Ragnow will play in his first season, it just really depends on when in 2018 he’s 100 percent.
