6. Roy Williams Draft Trade (2002 NFL Draft)

Cowboys received

8th overall pick (Roy Williams)

75th overall pick (Derek Ross)

2003 186h overall pick (Zuriel Smith)

Chiefs recieved

6th overall pick (Ryan Sims)

There are few moments in the early 2000’s that Cowboys fans can be proud about. A lot of those little victories can be seen in Roy Williams highlights. Thanks to an ill-advised Chiefs trade to move two spots up, the Cowboys got the dynamic heavy hitter.

I have never supported the idea of trading your life away just to move up a few picks. That is, of course, unless it favors my team.

The Chiefs decided to give the Cowboys two picks in the 2002 NFL draft and one in the 2003 NFL Draft in order to select Ryan Sims with the 6th overall pick. The move turned out to be not such a good idea.

The Cowboys, meanwhile, selected Oklahoma safety Roy Williams with the 8th overall pick. He was a star in Dallas that became a five-time pro bowler. The horse collar tackle was made illegal because of an incident involving him and Terrell Owens. This turned out to be a great decision for the Cowboys.

Ohio State defensive back Derek Ross was chosen with the 75th overall pick. He actually had a great rookie season, intercepting five passes. He did not get along with Bill Parcells, however, and was let go from the team in 2003 after fumbling two kick returns on Thanksgiving.

The 2003 pick was used on Hampton wide receiver Zuriel Smith. He would be regulated to kick returns in his rookie season and would only stay in the NFL for that year.
