Round 6 – Fred Warner – Linebacker – BYU
With all of the talk of trying to bring Earl Thomas to Dallas, and the pick up of Kris Richard the defensive backs coach from Seattle, I thought the Dallas Cowboys would look for a tweener and make their own Thomas. This is where Warner fits in.
Fred Warner plays linebacker, but watching him you could swear he would be better as a safety. He has really good cover skills and has the ability to keep plays in front of him and reads a developing play early. Watching him, I wonder why he wasn’t a safety all along.
Here is where Warner will get a question, where exactly do you play him? He was a linebacker at BYU, but really should learn a new position as a safety. He won’t light anyone up as a tackler and has been known to take a bad angle from time to time, but again, as a linebacker. For now he will contribute right away on special teams and could develop into a Thomas type guy.
Again, Poona Ford was available as was Damon Webb, but I think Thomas could become a batter safety than Webb in the long term and I wasn’t totally sold on Ford.
