7. Richie Anderson (2003 – 2004)

There are a few late-career success stories in Dallas Cowboys history. The case of Richie Anderson could be one for sure.

Anderson was a pro-bowl caliber fullback for ten seasons as a New York Jet. In 2000, he qualified for the Pro Bowl after catching 88 passes, which led all running backs.

He left the Jets after the 2002 season and decided to come to Dallas to play for his old coach Bill Parcells.

“The Big Tuna” was assembling a group of players that he had coached through his extensive career when he arrived in Dallas in 2003.

The signing of Anderson proved to be one of the best decisions made for the 2003 season. Anderson racked up a career-high 306 yards in 2003. He also added 69 receptions for 493 yards and four touchdowns.

The following season would contain Anderson’s best moment, however. In 2004, he was reunited with former Jets quarterback Vinny Testeverde and despite a few injuries throughout the year, would have another great year as a Cowboy.

On a Monday night game against the Redskins, Anderson took a handoff from Testeverde, scrambled to his left, and fired a left-handed spiral down the field to Terry Glenn in the back of the end zone for his first career passing touchdown. John Madden commented, “Anderson can run with it… he can block, he can catch, and he can also throw it!” That’s the complete fullback to me!

Anderson would retire after the 2004 season due to injuries. His final two seasons with the Dallas Cowboys are forever lodged in the team lore.
