The Dallas Cowboys like to draft players they are most familiar with. Their scouting department identifies the talented players based on film study and together with the front office they trim it down to scheme fit.  Knowing which players came on official visits is key to predicting who the Dallas Cowboys are targeting in the draft.

Here’s the re-cap of this mock draft:

Rd 1: D.J. Moore, WR, Maryland

Rd 2: Austin Corbett, OG, Nevada

Rd 3: [TRADE] Earl Thomas, FS

Rd 4: Breeland Speaks, DT, Mississippi State

Rd 4: Jack Cichy, LB, Wisconsin

Rd 5: Antonio Callaway, WR, Florida

Rd 6: Christian Sam, LB, Arizona

Rd 6: Mike Dissy, TE, Washington

Rd 6: Kurt Benkert, QB, Virginia

More from Dallas Cowboys

Rd 7: Josh Adams, RB, Notre Dame

The obvious position I missed was that of the 1-technique defensive tackle. I was looking in round four for one but no longer liked my available options.

The reality is, current Cowboys NT, Brian Price, is better than anyone you can probably find at that point. He played shockingly well last season and looks to take a much bigger role next season. He really is an underrated player we should get excited about.

I would have liked to add a third starting caliber LB early but fan favorite, Josey Jewel, will probably go near the bottom of the second and safety tops the needs list in the third round. Jack Cichy has a chance to be great so I feel fine about taking a Day 3 chance on him and Christian Sam may not be glamorous, but he’s reliable.

Other than that I know I found a play-maker to build around in D.J. Moore. A huge upgrade at guard in Austin Corbett. A starting safety in Earl Thomas. The replacement to David Irving in Breeland Speaks and my TE2 in Will Dissy. I also found depth at RB and a QB to groom late in the draft.

Next: Is Jerry banking on Earl Thomas?

While I’d probably feel better about packaging picks and moving up in the third to get Tarvarius Moore, I think the Cowboys have bigger plans and those plans are Earl Thomas.
