Round 3, Pick 64 & 95

[TRADE] Earl Thomas, FS, Seattle Seahawks

The Dallas Cowboys enter this round with one clear objective – find a center-fielding free safety. They can achieve this one of two ways:

  1. Draft Tarvarius Moore, a player quickly rising up draft boards or
  2. Trade for the incomparable Earl Thomas.

I don’t think Dallas will be able to sit back and wait until pick 64 to make their move. The word is out on Tarvarius Moore and it would surprise me to see him available when the Cowboys go on the clock.

If Earl Thomas is still in Seattle (and I suspect he will be), Dallas can talk about packaging picks. Seattle is clearly looking for a second rounder but given Thomas’ age (nearly 29) and contract situation (only under contract for one season), a second rounder is pretty high.

Pick 50 (Dallas’ second rounder) is worth 400 points on the Draft Trade Chart but both third rounders (one of which was acquired from NE) equal 305 points. It’s a more digestible price for an older player who’s potentially just a one-year rental.

With that said, Dallas doesn’t make this move if they don’t think they can re-sign Earl Thomas and you’d expect new secondary coach, Kris Richard, to have a good grasp on what it will take to win over Thomas.

If a deal cannot be done, the Cowboys will work aggressively to move up in the third round and select Tarvarius Moore.
