We’ve seen the good and the bad with Dak Prescott, so now we are left with the question: Is Dak Prescott the Dallas Cowboys’ Quarterback of the future?

When Dak Prescott first took the field that Saturday in August against the Los Angeles Rams, everyone knew Tony Romo’s days were numbered.  With Prescott completing 10-12 passes with 139 yards and 2 touchdown passes, the Dallas Cowboys seemed to find Romo’s successor. The dream scenario was about to come a reality, win now with Tony Romo leading the way all while grooming Prescott for the future.

Then, in a meaningless preseason game, the Cowboys’ worst fear became a reality.  Romo injured his back once again when Cliff Avril tackled him from behind. Thrust into action sooner than expected, Prescott took the bull by its horns and went on to lead Dallas to a 13-3 record and the top seed in the conference.  He won Offensive Rookie of the Year for his exceptional 2016 season. There was no doubt that the Prescott was the present and the future.

Fast forward to 2017.  Crippled by injuries and suspensions, the Dallas Cowboys and Prescott could not meet understandably high expectations.  Prescott statistically fell back down to Earth and had noticeable mental and technical struggles. Now that we have seen the best and the worst with Prescott, we are left with the question: Is Dak Prescott the future of the Dallas Cowboys?

Prescott can be the Franchise Quarterback

Dak Prescott fits right into the system Dallas runs on offense.  With the offense focused on the run game and ball control, Prescott’s strengths play right into the gameplan.  His use of his legs to extend plays and rush for a first down helps the Cowboys chew the clock.  Run-Pass Options are a huge part of the offense for most NFL teams and Prescott excels in running them.

More from Dallas Cowboys

Prescott has shown tremendous poise and composure in the pocket that not many young players have.  His knowledge to survey the defense and make the right play have been a major reason for his early success.

However, when he has faced heavy pressure, Prescott frequently shows his ability to creates something out of nothing.  Many times we have seen Prescott scramble away from pursuing defenders and heave the ball downfield to an open receiver or toss a beautiful sideline pass.

Dak Prescott is guaranteed to be a member of the Cowboys for at least the foreseeable future.  Prescott’s rookie contract runs through 2019.  In 2018, Prescott’s base salary will only be $630,000.  It is hard to build around quarterbacks who have upwards of $40,000,000 guaranteed money.

Dallas has an opportunity to build a championship team around Prescott the way the Rams are doing with Jared Goff or the Eagles with Carson Wentz.  Dallas already has a playoff-caliber roster, and by adding a few more pieces, the Cowboys could hopefully capture their 6th Super Bowl while their quarterback services are cheap.
