Dallas Cowboys 7-Round Mock Draft (final edition)

With the Dallas Cowboys making some noise over the past few weeks, or at least I think they did (haha), we take a look at a final mock draft the week of the NFL draft. This one is slightly different than the past ones, as trades do in fact happen and the needs have been adjusted. Let’s go over the rules.

The mock was done with Fanspeak’s On the Clock Simulator. There were 20 simulations using a mix of the draft boards, and the most common picked player is who is represented in this mock. This will include trades as I do not think the Dallas Cowboys will use all ten picks. This is also assuming they try to make a play for Earl Thomas. Which we will also cover.

So without further ado, let’s jump straight into the final mock draft!

Round 1 – Courtland Sutton – Wide Receiver – SMU

I really wanted to go with a linebacker here, but only Leighton Vander Esch was available a few times when the Cowboys picked. If this is how the draft falls, I can see the Cowboys trying to trade down to a later pick in the first and pick up a few more picks to use next round to move up. Wide Receiver is a top need and Sutton is a smart pick. Ridley was gone, and DJ Moore was available at 19, but was gone before the Cowboys would pick after the trade.

Sutton looks like he could be one of the few X receivers in this draft. His stock has risen since the start of the draft season, and for good reason. While he isn’t a 4.4 type of guy, he has enough speed to be a threat, although he is considered more of a possession type receiver. He has great hands and his projection of what he can be is quite high. Some will be upset the Cowboys miss Moore, but Sutton would give the Cowboys a red zone threat.

Sutton will need some work on his route running and can be a little slow off the line. It is reported he is off the charts in term of work ethic and intelligence, so that works in his favor on fixing this. Adding him to the wide receiver corps would allow him to work his way to the number one receiver behind Allen Hurns. With the trade down the Cowboys get a third and a seventh.
