Charvarius Ward – CB – Middle Tennessee

Stop me if you have heard this before. A Middle Tennessee cornerback doesn’t get an invite to the NFL Combine, get projected as a late round pick, and ends up in the Pro Bowl in his second season in the NFL. It actually happened, his name is Kevin Byard. Two years later Ward is following a similar path, except he didn’t get drafted in the third round.

Ward made me stop for a second once I started watching him and wonder why teams passed on him. Amy Trask once told me, you never pass on corners, you always need good corners. The only thing after watching Ward is he can get a little too grabby and on the line of pass interference. But, watching him play a few games, I can’t help but think he will find a way to be on the roster.

Ward plays very physically and is not afraid to mix it up with a wide receiver. He has an outstanding nose for the ball and will get his head around quickly, find the ball, and knock it down. He will fight through a receiver and play the ball at its highest point. He has speed which will help him as well.

If Ward can learn to not grab at receivers and play so physical down the field, he could stick around and surprise some people. He won’t be able to make up for mistakes in the NFL with his athleticism, but he looks like he has some raw talent. Just someone to keep an eye on his development.
