David Wells – Tight End – San Diego St.

If you read my final mock before the draft I had the Dallas Cowboys taking David Wells. The reasoning wasn’t because I thought that Wells would burn up the passing game and be the heir apparent to Jason Witten, but because I thought Wells would offer quite a bit as a blocker and help the running game. This was more of an heir apparent to James Hanna.

Wells might be the best blocking tight end in this draft at the tight end position. He is stout and strong at the point of attack and isn’t afraid to mix it up with any defensive lineman. Wells is not the guy you want to be the main cog in the passing game like Witten was. He could one day get there, but for now Wells is a blocking tight end who can catch when asked to.

Wells really is James Hanna 2.0. Hanna made his money off of blocking for the running game and once in a while surprising teams with a catch out of nowhere. If Wells can find his role as a blocker than he has a place on the Dallas Cowboys. Jason Garrett and Scott Linehan love their 12 personnel sets and this is where Wells fits.

I thought a team would take a flier on Wells late in the draft as there are many teams who are more of a run first type offense. With the Cowboys looking to be more run heavy, Wells makes sense. If he can contribute on special teams, block well, and be a steady player, he will find a way to stick around.
