Donovan Olumba – CB – Portland St.

Olumba is from a small school that did not have a very good season in 2017. The first question as to why the Dallas Cowboys decided to sign him was difficult to find. I didn’t see what the reason was until I watched a few more of his plays (which to be fair there’s not many to be found). Olumba may not be a true cornerback.

Olumba is listed as a cornerback who had one season as a starter where he broke up seven passes. He looked slow in his backpedal and hip turn to run with wide receivers and didn’t really blow me away with speed. Then it hit me, he would be better as a safety.

He has the size and nose for the ball like a free safety who was being forced to play cornerback. If he were to be able to keep plays in front of him, he looks like he should be able to diagnose and react better than trying to man up a wide receiver.

He has some strength which should help him if he were to switch to safety. He can bump a man on the line fairly well, but if he is asked to play with a cushion, the wide receiver will usually catch him as Olumba turns to pursue. Using his size and reach would help him with a transition, but keeping him at corner seems like the wrong way to go for him.
