The Dallas Cowboys should show some interest in former Philadelphia Eagle Mychal Kendrick. He would give the Cowboys great depth at the linebacker position.

The Philadelphia Eagles have just released veteran linebacker Mychal Kendricks to free up some cap space. Kendricks was going to count $7.6 million against the Eagles cap and even though he was fairly impressive during the Eagles Super Bowl run. Now that he is a free agent he could end up landing with the Dallas Cowboys. Let’s take a look at Kendricks and see how likely it is he ends up in Big D.

The Dallas Cowboys can use all the help that they can get at the linebacker position. Sure, first round pick, Leighton Vander Esch should make a major impact but Jaylon Smith and Sean Lee are not a lock to stay on the field for 16 plus games.

The Cowboys acquired some extra insurance as they recently added Indiana Hoosier, Chris Covington who was taken in the sixth round. Adding a few extra bodies before training camp begins would seemingly be in the teams best interest.

That is where Kendrick comes in, the former Philadelphia Eagle has a very versatile skill set. Kendricks plays the middle but could be effective in other areas. It is not known just how much the Dallas Cowboys would have to pay Kendricks in order to bring him into the fold but if a short term team friendly deal is possible, why not take the risk?

The Cowboys are one injury away from once again struggling to fill all of their roles at linebacker. This risk will only multiply as the season goes on and Dallas should be looking for a backup capable of starting multiple games.

More from Dallas Cowboys

We have already seen that Lee has a propensity to get banged up and Vander Esch is still an unknown commodity so adding another linebacker is really the only other option here. The loss of Anthony Hitchens and Kyle Wilber compounded with the potential injury factors make the addition of several linebackers almost seem like a necessity.

The Dallas Cowboys do have some cap space so it will be interesting to see how long they wait before they try to sign bodies for training camp. Kendricks was a pretty decent role player for the Eagles prior to his release and even managed to make an impact as his snaps decreased. It is likely if he was still making $4 million or less he would still be with Philadelphia.

The Dallas Cowboys also need to bring in a few more defensive tackles and safeties prior to camp so it is possible we will see a fleury of activity before training camp begins.
