Dallas Cowboys: Five outsider misconceptions of the franchise
By Reid Hanson
Cowboys fans are fairweather fans
This one is a head-scratcher. With only two playoff wins in the last two decades, the Dallas Cowboys have been one of the least accomplished teams in the NFL. Heck, ask any outsider and they’ll be happy to tell you that.
But with such a lack of success, how do so many of those same outsiders confidently state that Cowboys fans are “fairweather” or “bandwagon” fans?
Logically it makes exactly zero sense for a fairweather fan to be a Dallas Cowboys fan. I mean, if the Cowboys are as bad as everyone says they are, how could there possibly be any fairweathered ones left?
Not only have the Cowboys proved to be arguably the least fair weathered in the NFL, but they are may even be the most loyal and supportive. Every year Emory University releases a fan equity ranking. Mike Lewis, through Fanalyics, attempts to answer, “who has the best fans in the NFL?”.
While many “researchers” have attempted this in the past, they usually rely on surveys or subjective data to draw conclusions. Fanalyitic takes those dumb polls, questionnaires, and other subjective crap out of the equation. He replaces it with cold hard facts and measurable data.
The result?
The Dallas Cowboys have the best fans in the NFL. Yup, when controlling for factors like market size and win-loss record, the Cowboys come out tops in support. That includes at home, on the road, on social media, and in the marketplace.
This study is an annual endeavor and one of the most well-respected of its kind. To see the Cowboys as repeat champs on this, despite the disappointing season, says a lot about the Cowboys faithful.
It says Cowboys fans are not bandwagon folk, nor are they silent supporters. They are outspoken and active customers in the market. That’s pretty impressive considering how little postseason success they’ve seen, wouldn’t you say?
